Zero waste Foundation

From June 5–7, 2026, the African Transport & Logistics Supportive Foundation (ATLSF) proudly stood as a Strategic Partner, representing the realities, challenges, and immense potential of African logistics on the global stage. As we prepare for COP31 in Antalya, this forum was not just another event; it was a powerful platform where zero waste was rightly positioned as a critical driver of climate action and economic resilience.

Why Zero Waste Matters Deeply for African Logistics

In Africa, poor waste management is not merely an environmental issue; it is a direct threat to our supply chains. Clogged drains lead to flooded roads, delaying trucks, damaging cargo, increasing operational costs, and endangering the lives of drivers and operators. Methane emissions from landfills accelerate climate change, which in turn damages critical transport infrastructure. These are daily realities our members face.

At ATLSF, we see zero waste not as an abstract ideal, but as a practical solution that can:

  • Reduce flooding on major transport corridors
  • Cut methane emissions that worsen climate impacts on roads and ports
  • Create circular economy opportunities that generate value from waste
  • Strengthen climate-resilient logistics networks across the continent

This is why our participation in the Zero Waste Forum 2026 was strategic and impactful.

Highlights from ATLSF’s Participation

For three dynamic days in Istanbul, our delegation actively engaged with global policymakers, innovators, experts, and fellow changemakers. Key moments included:

  • Amplifying African Perspectives: We shared real-world insights on how zero waste principles can tackle landfill methane, prevent waste-induced flooding on highways, and support sustainable supply chains in manufacturing, agriculture, and retail sectors.
  • High-Level Discussions: Deep conversations on circular economy models that can reduce logistics costs while creating green jobs and more reliable transport routes.
  • Strategic Networking: Building partnerships that will help us deliver tangible support to African logistics operators, drivers, and communities.

Special appreciation goes to Hon. (Mrs) Lydia Akinwale, Co-Founder of ATLSF, and our entire delegation for representing Africa with excellence and passion.

We extend heartfelt thanks to the Zero Waste Foundation and the Government of Türkiye for hosting such a well-organized and solution-focused forum. The high-level participation, including remarks from H.E. Emine Erdoğan, First Lady of Türkiye and Honorary President of the Zero Waste Foundation, underscored the seriousness with which Türkiye is tackling these issues.

As noted in official communications: “We are taking the necessary steps meticulously regarding environment, climate, and waste management.” This commitment sets a strong example for nations across Africa and beyond.

The Bigger Picture: From Istanbul to Africa

The forum brought together over 5,000 participants from 183 countries, creating a rich tapestry of ideas around resource efficiency, food loss reduction, and sustainable systems. For ATLSF, the clearest takeaway is this:

Zero Waste is Climate Action. And for the logistics sector, it is also economic resilience.

We returned to Africa more determined than ever to:

  • Advocate for better waste management policies along transport corridors
  • Support operators with practical zero waste and circular solutions
  • Push for infrastructure that protects roads and ports from climate and waste-related risks
  • Bridge the gap by giving logistics professionals a strong voice in policy conversations

The mission did not end in Istanbul; it was energized there.
